Sabbath: Learning to Rest as God Intended

Sabbath is not a pause from following Jesus—it is one of the primary ways we follow Him.

From the opening pages of Scripture to the life and teachings of Jesus, Sabbath is revealed not as a rule to survive, but as a rhythm designed to form God’s people. Before there was law, there was rest. Before commands were given at Sinai, God taught newly freed slaves to trust Him through a weekly rhythm of provision and rest. Sabbath was God’s way of reshaping identity after generations of bondage.

In this series, we’ll explore the Sabbath through four movements: before the Law, within the Law, reclaimed by Jesus, and practiced today. We’ll see how Sabbath anchored Israel’s identity in freedom rather than performance, how neglecting it led to spiritual erosion, and how Jesus restores Sabbath as a gift meant for human flourishing. Drawing on Scripture and voices like John Mark Comer, this series invites us to resist hurry, reject productivity as identity, and rediscover rest as an act of trust.

Sabbath is not about doing less for God—it’s about becoming the kind of people who live with Him. It’s a weekly declaration that we are not what we produce, consume, or accomplish, but sons and daughters sustained by a faithful Father.

  • “Despite relocating after initially attending services in person, Bara continues to be a cherished part of my spiritual journey through its online platform. The warm embrace of the community, Pastor Joel’s impactful messages, and the numerous avenues for involvement and service have left a lasting impression. Bara not only fosters a sense of belonging but also facilitates meaningful connections that transcend physical boundaries. It’s a testament to the church’s dedication to spreading Christ’s love making everyone feel at home, regardless of their location.”

  • Bara is everything we have prayed for in a church. There is a real sense of connection there. Pastor Joel and Kim have been supportive of my past ministries and welcomed them to Bara. My husband is a part of the worship team and loves it. So there are many opportunities to get involved and serve. We love Bara and what they stand for!

  • “Bara is a place that you feel seen and receive great Jesus teachings. They love the lord and their love is shown in actions. Bara Church is the real deal!”

  • After my parent’s death we were sorting through items in their home and I pulled a bible study book off of a shelf. The following day I began reading it and after turning a few pages I saw that my Mother had written “Love 1 4 God” on top of a page. Loving one for God was a BARA Church theme from many years ago and my parents could only attend BARA the one time a year they would come and visit us. My Mother was so touched by the thought of Loving One Person For God that she felt compelled to write it in a study book. After I completed reading the book I decided that I needed to be back at BARA Church where a person can” Love 1 4 God” while also feeling God’s love through others.
